The Alexandra Hospital is the main medical facility in Nevis and is equipped with an x-ray machine and CT scanner in addition to general medical and surgical wards. Emergencies are dealt with immediately and the hospital can facilitate minor to moderate surgeries, however, there are no dialysis facilities or blood bank at the hospital. Most surgeries are done on the island, with the exception of open-heart, major orthopedics and brain surgery; these are referred to Trinidad, Puerto Rico and Miami. The diagnostic laboratory at the hospital has a limited capacity.
The ambulance crews that work from the hospital are allowed to perform IV, general stabilization and advanced first aid functions at the hospital to bolster the medical care available on site. There are nine doctors and three surgeons on staff.
The hospital is located on the outskirts of Charlestown, which is the main urban area on Nevis and has a population of 1,500. It is the main administrative and commercial centre on Nevis and is the hub for much of the transportation on the island.
